Assemblymember Donna Lupardo:

  • She also wants the four money issues NYSUT is suggesting (billionaires’ tax, ultra-millionaires’ tax, assessment, and Trump Tax cut- NY Senate bill).
  • She said most legislators want new revenue and thinks the governor is now okay for more taxes.
  • It looks like there will be 13 billion dollars in unrestricted aid and 9.7 billion dollars in aid to K-12 schools from the Federal Government.
  • The governor is giving money to schools to cover transportation, school meals, internet, materials, etc. for the Spring of 2020 but nothing for staff or forward to the following school year.
  • Christine Bangel, the Owego Teacher Center Director, discussed a possible 30% reduction for the teacher center for next year.
  • Joshua Gregory from Endicott discussed the need for more professional development.  His numbers of teachers are up.
  • Janice Strauss from SUNY Cortland discussed the need for the Teacher Centers to help students’ teachers because they have not been able to go into the classrooms.  They want help and will need mentoring.
  • I discussed the fact that the funding for the Teacher Center has been reduced from what it was years ago and has stayed steady at a lower rate for the last few years.  This means we now have another reduction in value.
  • Donna Lupardo said she was emailing the education committee about increasing funding for the Teacher Centers.

Respectfully submitted,
