NYSUT Retiree Council 45 Holds Annual Meeting

The NYSUT Retiree Council 45 held its annual meeting on June 20, 2023, at the CNY Living History Museum in Cortland, New York. The meeting was well-attended by 24 members, who heard updates on a variety of topics, including the upcoming regional conference, the Fix Tier 6 campaign, and the Cortland County Office of the Aging.

Mark Padgett, the NYSUT Retiree Services Consultant for RC#11 and RC#45, gave an update on the upcoming regional conference, which will be held on September 13, 2023. He encouraged members to attend and help reach the goal of 100 attendees. Padgett also discussed the future of NYSUT's retiree newsletter, which will soon become an opt-in newsletter.

Vicki Darrow, the president of RC#45, gave an update on the Fix Tier 6 campaign. She distributed data showing how unfair Tier 6 is compared to other tiers, and she urged members to continue to pressure the legislature to change the law.

Cyndy VanPatten Young from the Cortland County Office of the Aging gave a presentation on the services offered by the office. She covered a wide range of topics, including healthcare, Medicaid, exercise, food, transportation, eldercare, health care proxy, and senior centers.

Tom Gath, the webmaster for RC#45, shared the group's new website. He showed how the website can be used to access a variety of information, including meeting minutes, the scholarship application, and the contact information for the RC's officers.

The meeting also included the election of officers. All of the nominations were uncontested, and the new officers were elected by acclamation.

After the meeting, attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by Cindy, the director of the CNY Living History Center. They were also encouraged to tour the museums after the meeting, as their reservations included admission to the center.

The meeting was a success, and members left feeling informed and energized. They are looking forward to the upcoming regional conference and to continuing to work to improve the lives of NYSUT retirees.

Scholarship Winners Announced

The NYSUT Retiree Council 45 also announced the winners of its new scholarship. The scholarship is available to graduating seniors with a parent or grandparent in RC#45. This year, there were four applicants, and the two winners are Paul Starliper from Greene HS and Oscar Williams from Waverly HS. The scholarships are each valued at $250.

Congratulations to Paul and Oscar!
